As he trailed kisses along her temple and ear, she melted even more into him. But yet, if he really wasn’t into her, why did his kisses feel so real? “Feel better?”
“A little,” she said against his neck. “I feel stupid.”
“Does this happen a lot? Not the stupid part, but the freak-out?” He laughed softly, and she shrugged.
“Only when I look at baby stuff. It legit freaks me out.”
“I mean, I know I just came on board, but it freaks me out too, Wren.”
“But you can drop out at any time.”
“But I won’t,” he said simply. “I’m in this, for him and for you. He’s mine as you are mine.”
Her heart clenched in her chest, unsure what to believe. Her mind or his words. Words were such shit, though. His actions spoke louder, and he didn’t want her. But he was holding her in the middle of the boys clothing section, not letting go.
What did it all mean?
Just fucking ask him, you idiot!
“I don’t want to be a shit mom.”
He pulled back, looking down at her as his hands came up to cup her face. “You are going to be an awesome mom.”
Getting lost in his eyes, she couldn’t move. “I don’t know that I will be.”
But he only nodded, his eyes full of the confidence she lacked, as he leaned down, pressing his lips to her nose. “You will be, because I’ll be there to help you. To be behind you, one hundred percent. Two are better than one, you know.” His lips curved in a goofy way. Loving the playfulness in his eyes, she found herself smiling back at him. “Not so stressful when there is someone there to make you smile. Do it more.”
She swallowed hard. “I don’t usually have a reason to.”
He took that as a challenge. “That will have to change.” Gazing into her eyes, he tucked her hair behind her ear. “It’s all going to be okay. Having a kid is great, I promise. We’re going to do great.”
We’re.
Together?
Or apart?
Wait, that didn’t matter.
“I already love him,” she said, more to herself.
“You don’t have tell me that, Wren, I know you do.”
Her heart slowed a bit as she shrugged, looking away. “I just hope I don’t suck at it.”
“You won’t,” he promised as he tipped her chin up. “I believe in you.”
“You do?”
He kissed her lips. “I do.”
And with that, her heart shattered in her chest. He believed in her. No one had ever told her that. Her parents were always proud, she knew that, but they never believed in her. Then, had she given them a chance to believe in her since she had gotten pregnant? No, she’d hidden it right off the bat because she knew they would be disappointed. They’d judge her. But Jensen hadn’t done that from the beginning.
He was just there for her.
Which was confusing as hell.
Shaking her head, she moved out of his arms, needing the distance. “Thank you.”
“Always.”
She gave him a sideways glance as his hand came to the small of her back. She hadn’t realized how much that little gesture would mean until she looked around once more. This time she didn’t feel like she was drowning in her panic, she actually felt somewhat confident. Excited, sort of. Not much, but a little. It was silly, but she did. Leaning in toward her, he pointed toward the crib area. “So, tell me, you’re digging the Disney’s Baby Monsters, right?”
When she looked up at him, he was grinning, his eyes so full of eagerness. “You don’t want the puppies playing sports?”
“No, there isn’t a hockey stick anywhere on there. Which is bullshit, by the way.”
“Agreed, but I heard there is a hockey set online I could order, but it’s pricey. I bet the Monsters are cheaper.”
His smile dropped, all seriousness on his face. “Really?”
Her grin grew. “Yeah.”
“Done, we’re getting that, and I don’t care how much it costs. He needs that.”
“I agree. Gotta start him young.”
“Agreed,” he said, wrapping his arm around her shoulders as he led her toward the cribs and other nursery furniture. There was so much, so many options, and even more things that she didn’t even know she needed. Before she could react to it, though, he asked, “Now, big question. Which crib?”
Her shoulders fell as she took in all the options, which were endless and so damn cute. “Crap.”
“Yeah,” he agreed. “At least it’s cute?”
“Yeah, but we’re gonna be here forever, aren’t we?”
She gazed up at him, and he nodded slowly, a resigned look on his face, though his eyes were full of gusto. “Looks that way.”
“But we hate shopping.”
“We do, but it’s for the little man. Who we really need to name, by the way.”
She exhaled once more as she nodded. “This is true.”
“And at least we’ll be together through it all.”
Her lips quirked at the side as she looked up at him. Her anger from the night before was gone, and while she wasn’t sure of his intentions, it did feel good to have him by her side. Even if the longevity of his position there wasn’t certain. She knew, Lord, she knew, to keep her heart wrapped up tight, but when his lips curved and his eyes brightened as he leaned in, kissing her cheek, the wrapping she had around her heart loosened a bit as he whispered, “That’s a good thing, Wren.”
She returned the grin as she nodded. “I know.”
“So smile.”
“I am.”
When he poked her side, she laughed out as he wrapped her up from behind, holding her close, his hands coming along her belly. “There you go, now let’s do this.”
Swallowing hard, Wren felt her heart becoming more and more of a hot-ass mess. But for a moment, she ignored it.
She found herself smiling. Really smiling.
For Jensen.
“Maybe we should wait for Jo and Brie?”
Jensen closed Wren’s car door as he looked over at her. Of course, he thought she was gorgeous. She blew his mind with her beauty in a pair of simple overalls that stretched across their child and a tank that rode low on her breasts and would be starring in his dreams that night. They were so damn full, so sexy, but he was staying strong. Ish. The last couple days had been hard, but he was doing his best. Though, seeing her change each day that passed, well, it was getting harder.
“A little,” she said against his neck. “I feel stupid.”
“Does this happen a lot? Not the stupid part, but the freak-out?” He laughed softly, and she shrugged.
